Future Money - Cryptocurrencies in Contemporary Fiction

Project 36602 funded in whole by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)

This project seeks to explore the significance of contemporary fiction in understanding and anticipating the dynamics within global capital markets. Its core aim is to dissect how literature provides insights into the evolution of cryptocurrencies within a transatlantic dialogue between American and Austrian fiction. The project aims to analyze an aesthetic dimension to the ‘theatricality of global markets’, the decentralization of finance, and the rise of cryptocurrencies and digital assets—elements, which often go unnoticed in quantitive economic frameworks of analysis.

Key questions include: How has contemporary fiction and media anticipated—or even influenced-- the dynamics of global markets and the emergence of cryptocurrrencies and blockchain technology? In what ways does fiction shape our view of the role digital currencies play in micro- and macro-economic contexts? And how can we approach economics from an angle of arts and humanities, philosophy and specifically contemporary and speculative fiction?

This is an open exploration into the role of fiction in the evolution of money, as well as an investigation into the radical transformations we are about to face in its digital future!

Feel free to reach out if you want to join in or have further questions about what fiction can teach us about future money!
